Adam Wirth ? Blog Archive ? Seasonal Affect Disorder:

Wikipedia defines ?seasonal affect disorder? (SAD), as a mood disorder?in which people that have normal mental health throughout most of the year experience depressive?symptoms in the winter or summer.? Most common in the winter and largely caused by a lack of sunshine, the disorder can be described as winter depression.? I was surprised to see that 9.7% of people living in New Hampshire suffer from seasonal affect disorder, the highest reported percentage in the US.

I don?t know if it because we have 300 days of sunshine here in Boise with plenty of fun winter activities, but I love the winter season and this year I really embraced it.? I am sure if I lived in the North East and it was dark, cold and grey for 5 months I would be picking up the Boca Raton real estate news paper, but I don?t live in the NE and for me any slight winter depression symptoms are smashed out with a little fun winter training.

With Mac on both the Nordic and Alpine ski teams and Lucy skiing every weekend, I decided to take a step back from the early season triathlon training and do some fun training that would allow me to be around the kids as much as possible.? The jury is still out and I might be a slow old man this summer, but I am hoping the winter training translates into fitness I can use this summer.? The focus was completely different than what I have done in past years; I have always skied in the winter but it was secondary to getting in my running, swimming and riding.? This winter I wanted to pick a couple fun winter races and some fun trips into the mountains just enjoying the change of season with a change of focus.? This would mean running on, ?maybe two times a week, riding in the snow, nordic/alpine skiing, ski mountaineering, and most importantly swimming at most once a month.? I picked a local Nordic ski race and the Winter Triathlon National Championships as training and I would make the Pole Pedal Paddle in Jackson the winter objective.

The winter started off with a great December and January.? I had some excellent high mountain trips in the Tetons and the Sawtooths and I got to ski some fantastic terrain.? The backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering is really fantastic all-around training.? You not only get an excellent workout with significant elevation change at altitude, but it is also fantastic for your mental state.? Being in the high mountains releases something in your soul.? Don?t get me wrong, I love to race and be competitive, but it doesn?t compare to the enjoyment I have with a day with friends/family in the mountains.? Here are some photos from my experiences:

From the summit of Albright Peak.

Looking forward to keeping up with these two for at least the next couple seasons.

Lucy and I enjoying some sun after a fun day.

As far as racing goes, I was really pleased how this part of the year turned out.? I had a good race in Montana at the Winter Triathlon National Championships with a 3rd place podium finish.? The event was held at the Homestake Nordic Lodge which is an amazing facility and very worth checking out if you are a Nordic skier.

Winter doesn't mean you can't ride outside; here is the setup I used for Winter Tri Nationals and throughout the winter.

Podium for Winter Triathlon Nationals

And as mentioned above, the goal for the winter season was the Pole Pedal Paddle in Jackson.? Last year I finished 2nd to super-mountain-man Spencer Morton and I wanted to give it another go.? The race is a crazy combination of a 4,000 foot giant slalom from the top of the Tram at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, a 10K skate ski (shortened a bit this year due to a low valley snow year), a 19 mile time trial on the road, and finished with a 9 mile downriver paddle.? The event is in its 37th year and it offers a passage from winter to spring with a combination of these events into one of best races I have ever done.? I should also mention that it takes place during Spring Break with much of the racing/awards at the base of the resort so you have large crowds, bands and parties that make this a fantastic all around event.? In the end it was a super tight race and I still am having a hard time believing I edged Spencer out by just 37 seconds for the win.? I have to give huge props to my wife and Mac as the race/transition managers.? With the gear and logistics of this race, your support team is crucial and they did a fantastic job.? I also have to thank the Jackson Hole Ski Club.? They do an unbelievable job putting on this event and with a variety of team and individual classes it is a race everyone should come and do.

Some tough racing against Spencer Morton and Dave Bergart.

As the flowers bloom and the grass turns green, I can say that I am getting excited for the summer riding and training, but it was fun to mix it up this winter and spend more time on the snow.? I have no idea what it will do for my fitness and summer racing, but I certainly had a great time and my mental attitude is the best it has ever been.?? There is still snow up high and I might be able to sneak in a couple more days before it is all gone.

PFT: Next for Tebow?? | ?Not Philly? |? Nor Tampa

Jarvis JonesAP

The Steelers plunged to 8-8 in 2012.? Some think they?ll be worse in 2013.? Here?s a look at the quality of a draft class aimed at helping them get better.

What they needed:? Running back, receiver, linebacker, quarterback, cornerback, tight end, offensive line.

Who they got:
Round 1: Jarvis Jones, LB, Georgia.
Round 2: Le?Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State.
Round 3: Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State.
Round 4: Shamarko Thomas, S, Syracuse.
Round 4: Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma.
Round 5: Terry Hawthorne, CB, Illinois.
Round 6: Justin Brown, WR, Oklahoma.
Round 6: Vince Williams, LB, Florida St.
Round 7: Nick Williams, DT, Samford.

Where they hit:? They needed a high-impact pass rusher, and they got the guy with both potential and production.? Jones could be the next great Steelers linebacker, and they wisely waited for him to fall into their laps at No. 17.? Bell gives them a guy who could instantly become the starting running back, and they?ve once again taken receivers in the two rounds (three and six) where they found Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders, and Antonio Brown.

Where they missed:? Thomas, an undersized safety whose best attribute is his ability to deliver big hits, suffered multiple concussions last season.? It?s too much of a risk to take with a fourth-round draft pick.? Ditto for Jones; if the Steelers are looking for a backup, they could have waited until a later round than four.? The decision not to take a tight end could be a problem, if Heath Miller suffers a setback while recovering from a torn ACL.

Impact rookies:? Jones and Bell likely will instantly be added to the starting lineup.? Barring injury, each could become a candidate for rookie of the year on their respective sides of the ball.

Long-term prospects:? A solid draft class with a couple of guys who could become contributors and leaders in the near future.? And if the Steelers are still as good at scouting receivers as they were when finding Wallace, Sanders, and Brown, Thomas and Justin Brown could become difference makers, too.

Workplace safety in NZ 'getting worse' | Otago Daily Times Online ...

New Zealand Nurses Organisation organiser Lorraine Lobb marks the death at work of an Otago resident by placing a cross as part of a Workers' Memorial Day service held in Dunedin yesterday. Photo by Craig Baxter.

Workplace health and safety is getting worse in New Zealand and the Government must do more to stop people being killed and injured at work, Dunedin South MP Clare Curran says.

Ms Curran spoke at a service to mark International Workers' Memorial Day in Dunedin yesterday. During the event at the Otago Workers' Memorial, small white crosses were symbolically placed in the ground, each bearing the name of a person who had died at work in Otago.

''Unfortunately, things aren't getting better in New Zealand; they are getting worse,'' Ms Curran told the about 50 people who attended the service.

New Zealand workers often found it difficult to report unsafe environments or refuse to carry out unsafe tasks, for fear of retribution from their employers, she said.

This was made worse by the 90-day trial period for workers, which made it harder for people to challenge their bosses.

Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei, of Dunedin, spoke about the passing of the Holidays (Full Recognition of Waitangi Day and Anzac Day) Amendment Bill this month, which ensured people got Monday off when the days fell on weekends.

She was shocked that during the debate, those opposed said the Bill ''somehow was an abuse of the memory of those who had fought''.

Those opposed had failed to understand that most of people who went to work were ordinary working-class men and women fighting for decency.

''Yet their sons and daughters, their grandsons and granddaughters still do not live in a country where we have a decent system of protection in the workplace.''

Jurors set to get roadmap of Jackson civil trial

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The most complete account of Michael Jackson's final months is about to unfold in a cramped Los Angeles courtroom nearly four years after the pop superstar's death.

Lawyers for Jackson's mother will attempt to convince a jury that the company promoting the pop superstar's 2009 comeback concerts is responsible for his untimely death. The attorneys will try to prove that AEG Live hired and controlled the doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter over Jackson's demise.

AEG Live denies any wrongdoing and contests that they hired the physician who for months was giving Jackson doses of a powerful anesthetic in the singer's bedroom to help him sleep.

Opening statements on Monday will provide a roadmap for a case that will delve into Jackson's addiction struggles and issues previously unexplored in court. Many of those in the singer's orbit ? family, famous friends, doctors and his teenage children ? may testify during the months-long trial.

Some of the stars listed on the witness list include Quincy Jones, Diana Ross, Lou Ferrigno and Spike Lee. Both of Jackson's ex-wives, Lisa Marie Presley and Debbie Rowe, are also listed as potential witnesses.

Katherine Jackson sued in September 2010, claiming AEG failed to properly investigate her son's doctor, Conrad Murray. All but one of her claims has been dismissed, but millions and possibly billions of dollars are at stake. The trial pits the family of a global superstar against AEG Live, a private company that as part of the Anschutz Entertainment Group has helped spark the revitalization of downtown Los Angeles with its venue, the Staples Center.

Unlike the 2011 trial that ended with Murray's conviction, the civil trial will explore the troubled finances of both men ? a situation that Katherine Jackson's attorneys say created a conflict of interest for Murray that AEG should have been aware of.

The Houston-based cardiologist was deeply in debt when he agreed to serve as Jackson's personal doctor for a series of 50 concerts in London dubbed "This Is It." The doctor had liens and owed back child support when he began working with Jackson, expecting a $150,000 a month salary. Jackson died of acute propofol intoxication before the contract was fully signed.

The trial is expected to include detailed testimony about other doctors' treatment of Jackson, a subject that was largely off-limits in the criminal case. Unlike Murray's trial, which was broadcast live, the civil case will play out without cameras in a courtroom with only 45 public seats.

AEG denies they hired Murray, and have contended he should be considered an independent contractor, a designation many hospitals deem surgeons and other physicians.

Katherine Jackson's attorneys, Brian Panish and Kevin Boyle, have repeatedly cited emails sent by top AEG executives referencing Murray's pay and his obligations to get Jackson to perform.

Marvin S. Putnam, an attorney for AEG who was not available to comment, has said the company could not have foreseen the circumstances that led to Murray's administration of propofol to Jackson as a sleep aide.

AEG has said in court filings that Jackson's family is seeking $40 billion in damages, but Panish denies that's the figure he's seeking.

"We've never asked for $40 billion," he said. "The jury is going to decide what the loss is."

The high figure, Panish said, is the company's attempt to "prejudice everybody against the Jacksons." He says the case isn't about money.

"It's about getting the truth," he said. "We'd like to get out all the evidence. The evidence is going to speak for itself that AEG had a lot of involvement and they completely deny responsibility."

Jackson's three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket are also listed as plaintiffs on the case.

Asked whether he and the Jacksons are concerned about the image of the "Thriller" singer that will emerge in court, Panish said the trial will show a different side of the superstar. "Mrs. Jackson and her grandchildren suffered a tremendous loss and AEG has never recognized that and continues to deny responsibility," he said. "The other side of the story hasn't been told."

A jury of six men and six women has been selected to decide the case.

Monday's remarks by Panish and Putnam will provide the jurors' their first true insight into the evidence they will likely hear, and once again pull back the veil of Michael Jackson's private life.

Belief in God Can Improve Mental Health Outcomes | Psych Central ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on April 26, 2013

Belief in God Improves Mental Health Outcomes A new study suggests belief in God may significantly improve the outcome of those receiving short-term treatment for psychiatric illness.

Researchers followed patients receiving care from a hospital-based behavioral health program to investigate the relationship between patients? level of belief in God, expectations for treatment and actual treatment outcomes.

In the study, published in the current issue of Journal of Affective Disorders, researchers comment that people with a moderate to high level of belief in a higher power do significantly better in short-term psychiatric treatment than those without.

?Belief was associated with not only improved psychological well-being, but decreases in depression and intention to self-harm,? says David H. Rosmarin, Ph.D., an instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

The study looked at 159 patients, recruited over a one-year period. Each participant was asked to gauge their belief in God as well as their expectations for treatment outcome and emotion regulation, each on a five-point scale.

Levels of depression, well-being, and self-harm were assessed at the beginning and end of their treatment program.

Of the patients sampled, more than 30 percent claimed no specific religious affiliation yet still saw the same benefits in treatment if their belief in a higher power was rated as moderately or very high.

Patients with ?no? or only ?slight? belief in God were twice as likely not to respond to treatment as patients with higher levels of belief.

Investigators believe the study demonstrates that a belief in God is associated with improved treatment outcomes in psychiatric care.

?More centrally, our results suggest that belief in the credibility of psychiatric treatment and increased expectations to gain from treatment might be mechanisms by which belief in God can impact treatment outcomes.?

Investigators hope that the study will lead to additional investigation on the clinical implication of spirtual life as more than 90 percent of the U.S. population hold religious beliefs.

Rumored lowspec Samsung Galaxy Core smartphone has 43inch display, vague hints of GS4 styling

Samsung has a thing for releasing budget chasers soon after the main shot. There have already been strong hints of a GS4 Mini to capitalize on the flagship's buzz and now a purported leak over at hi-tech@mail.ru suggests another, even more cut-down model could be on its way, this time called the Galaxy Core. According to the Russian site -- which has some pedigree -- the Core has a 4.3-inch display with an 800 x 480 resolution, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 768MB RAM, 8GB of internal storage (plus microSD), a 5MP rear camera, 1,800mAh battery and likely Android 4.1-flavored TouchWiz. In other words, it could be very similar to the Galaxy S II Plus or the slightly smaller Galaxy S III Mini or the slightly bigger China-destined Galaxy Win -- so similar, in fact, that it leaves us largely indifferent. The rumored price of 14,000 rubles ($430) also seems way overboard -- although Russian prices often do.

Update: As a number of you spotted, this phone has another differentiating spec. It turns out dvuhsimochny means dual SIM, which makes complete sense when you say it out loud.

FDA approves return of drug for morning sickness

(AP) ? Talk about a comeback: A treatment pulled off the market 30 years ago has won Food and Drug Administration approval again as the only drug specifically designated to treat morning sickness.

That long-ago safety scare, prompted by hundreds of lawsuits claiming birth defects, proved to be a false alarm.

Monday's FDA decision means a new version of the pill once called Bendectin is set to return to U.S. pharmacies under a different name ? Diclegis ? as a safe and effective treatment for this pregnancy rite of passage.

In the intervening decades, the treatment is widely believed to have undergone more scrutiny for safety than any other drug used during pregnancy.

"There's been a lot of buzz about this. Nothing better has come along" to treat morning sickness in those 30 years, said Dr. Edward McCabe, medical director for the March of Dimes, who welcomed the step.

"We know safety-wise, there's zero question," said Dr. Gary Hankins of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, who headed one of the company-financed studies of Diclegis that led to its approval.

U.S. sales of Diclegis are expected to begin in early June, according to Canada-based manufacturer Duchesnay Inc. The company has long sold a generic version of the pill in Canada under yet another name, Diclectin.

For all the names, the main ingredients are the same: Vitamin B6 plus the over-the-counter antihistamine doxylamine, found in the sleep aid Unisom. U.S. obstetricians have long told nauseated pregnant women how to mix up the right dose themselves.

In fact, in 2004 the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued guidelines calling the combination a first-line therapy.

The difference that prescription-only Diclegis would offer: Combining both ingredients with a delayed-release coating designed to help women take a daily dose before their nausea sets in.

The return of an FDA-cleared treatment is needed, said ACOG spokesman Dr. Jeffrey Ecker, an obstetrician at Massachusetts General Hospital who wasn't involved in the study of Diclegis.

"It's not magic," Ecker cautioned, saying few women see their symptoms completely disappear with the medication. "But for some it allows them to be much more functional."

In Hankins' study, about 260 U.S. women with morning sickness were given either Diclegis or a dummy pill for two weeks. The Diclegis users missed on average 1 1/2 fewer days of work than their counterparts.

Duchesnay wouldn't reveal a U.S. price.

About three-quarters of women experience at least some nausea and vomiting with the hormonal surges of early pregnancy. Although it often occurs upon waking, some women have trouble all day. It usually ends by the second trimester.

About 1 percent of women undergo dangerously severe vomiting called hyperemesis gravidarum, the condition that made headlines last December when in Britain, Prince William's wife Kate was briefly hospitalized.

An initial version of Bendectin began selling in 1956, and 33 million women around the world were estimated to have taken it before the lawsuits began. At the time, the FDA continued to call the drug safe; appeals courts ruled in favor of Bendectin maker Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals; and eventually a U.S. Supreme Court decision would render continuing suits unlikely. But Merrell Dow declared the litigation cost too high, and quit making Bendectin in 1983.

What happened? The government estimates 1 in 33 babies are born with birth defects regardless of medication use during pregnancy, and studies eventually concluded that Bendectin didn't increase that baseline risk. McCabe of the March of Dimes says it's important to recognize that when a drug is widely used in pregnancy, some babies will be born with birth defects that are a coincidence.

Doctors advise trying some other steps before turning to medication for morning sickness: Eat protein snacks before bed. Nibble crackers or sip ginger ale before getting out of bed. Eat frequent small meals. Avoid nausea-triggering odors.

When that doesn't work, Ecker says vitamin B6 alone helps some women. His next step is the B6-and-antihistamine combination that will form Diclegis. A next-step option includes the drug Zofran, normally used to treat nausea from cancer therapy.

Gay rights activists, topless protesters greet Putin

By Alexei Anishchuk and Thomas Escritt

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin defended Russia's treatment of homosexuals on Monday in Amsterdam, where 1,000 gay rights activists waved pink and orange balloons and blasted out dance music to press home their protest.

Western nations need Russia for energy and as a market for exports but are uneasy about Putin's human rights policies and his treatment of opponents in his new Kremlin term.

Putin's visit to the Netherlands and Germany, Moscow's biggest trade partners in Europe, also comes at an awkward time after a wave of state inspections of foreign-funded non-governmental organizations in Russia that has been much criticized abroad.

In Amsterdam, Dutch and Russian companies signed a batch of energy deals and Putin met Queen Beatrix and Prime Minister Mark Rutte, while around 1,000 protesters blew whistles, played loud music, and waved the gay pride flag nearby in the city famous for its liberal attitude.

Putin, who laughed off a topless protest earlier in the day in Germany, said Russia did not discriminate against gay people.

"In the Russian Federation - so that it is clear to everybody - there is no infringement on the rights of sexual minorities," he said.

"These people, like everyone else, enjoy all the same rights and freedoms as everyone else," he told a news conference - held at Amsterdam's Maritime Museum in a nod to the days when Peter the Great worked as a young man in an Amsterdam shipyard.

Russia's parliament has given preliminary approval to a ban on "homosexual propaganda" targeting minors, which critics say would effectively ban gay rights demonstrations. The United States has said the legislation "severely restricts freedom of expression and assembly".

Many houses and bridges in the historic canal district of Amsterdam were draped with banners and the rainbow flag of the gay pride movement, protesting about what human rights organizations say is institutional repression of gays in Russia.

"Putin go homo," read one, echoing the message "Putin go home" on the front page of Friday's NRC Next daily newspaper.

"I'm protesting against the anti-gay law in Russia because it's unreal. You can't tell people to go back into the closet," said one protester, who gave his name as Connie Feather, dressed in a rainbow striped chiffon dress and blue feather boa.

Earlier, in Germany, three members of the women's rights group Femen, which has protested against Russia's detention of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot around Europe, disrupted his visit to a trade fair in the German city of Hanover.

They stripped to the waist and shouted slogans calling Putin a "dictator" before being bundled away by security men.

"Regarding this performance, I liked it," grinned Putin at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "I did not catch what they were shouting, I did not even see if they were blondes, brunettes or chestnut-haired ..."

ECONOMIC TIES

Putin, who began his six-year third term as president last May, arrived in Amsterdam, after holding talks with Merkel.

They want to further boost booming economic ties but the German leader also repeated her concerns about human rights in Russia after raids by Russian authorities on German and other non-governmental organizations based in the country.

A new Russian law requires NGOs to register as "foreign agents" if they have foreign funding and are deemed to be involved in politics, something many groups have refused to do, saying they are not acting on behalf of other nations and are not trying to influence Russian politics.

For many, the term evokes Soviet-era oppression and Cold War espionage.

"This is about NGOs being able to work well and freely ... A lively civil society can only emerge when individuals can operate without fear or worry, of course on the basis of law," said Merkel, who grew up in communist East Germany.

Putin, a former KGB agent who worked in East Germany in the 1980s and speaks fluent German, denied the Kremlin was trying to muzzle NGOs and said Moscow just wanted to monitor the amounts of foreign funding coming into Russia.

"All our actions are connected not with closing and forbidding (foreign-funded NGOs in Russia), but with monitoring financial flows that go to non-governmental Russian organizations which are involved in internal political activity, and this money comes from outside of the country," he said.

"Regarding the freedom of work of these organizations, it is not limited at all. They only have to register."

Toss Frozen Grapes in Your Wine to Cool It Down

Toss Frozen Grapes in Your Wine to Cool It Down Most wine is best served between 45 and 60 degrees, so if you pull a bottle off your wine rack, it'll take awhile to lower the temperature in the fridge. It's much quicker to cool down individual glasses of wine, and a stash of frozen grapes is the only tool you need.

All you have to do is toss a few frozen grapes in your glass before you start drinking. Unsurprisingly, red grapes are perfect for red wines, and white grapes go well with white wine, but they won't pass much flavor through the skin, so it's not a huge deal if you only have one variety. The advantage of the grapes is that they won't water down your drink or cool it down too quickly like ice cubes. The grapes might affect the flavor of the wine ever so slightly, so I probably wouldn't use this with an expensive vintage, but it's perfect for cheap table wine. Plus, once you're done drinking, you have a delicious snack waiting for you at the bottom of the glass.

No Kids? Men More Depressed About It

Even though there's often more social pressure on women to have kids, men may actually feel more depressed and lonely over not having children, according to the results of a small British survey.

The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the British Sociological Association in London Wednesday (April 3) by Robin Hadley, of the United Kingdom's Keele University, who polled 27 men and 81 women who didn't have kids.

About the same proportions of men and women said they wanted kids (59 percent of men and 63 percent of women). Among that group, half of the men said they experienced isolation because they weren't parents, while just over a quarter of women said the same.

Compared with women, these men also were more likely to feel jealous of other parents and sad, angry, and depressed over not having kids.

"There is very little research on the desire for fatherhood among men," Hadley said in a statement. "This challenges the common idea that women are much more likely to want to have children than men, and that they consistently experience a range of negative emotions more deeply than men if they don't have children." [History's 12 Most Doting Dads]

There was one area where women beat the men: guilt. None of the men who wanted kids felt guilty about not having them, compared with 16 percent of women.

The survey was conducted with an online questionnaire among adults ages 20 to 66, with an average age of 41. Most were white, heterosexual and had full-time jobs.

In another poll of 125 people who were already parents, Hadley found that women who wanted more children had higher levels of anger, depression, guilt, isolation, sadness and yearning than men when they thought about not being able to have more kids.

Whereas the focus of this study was childless adults who wanted kids, it's important to note that not all people without children are the same. There are those who choose to be childfree and those facing infertility, job demands or financial concerns.

An American study published last year found that women who choose to be childfree felt more pressure to reproduce than other women without children, but they weren't so distressed about their life without kids. Meanwhile, women who wanted children but did not have them because of fertility or medical issues were the most distressed, according to those results, published in The Journal of Marriage and Family.

Lakers hang Shaq's No. 34 jersey in the rafters

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? When Shaquille O'Neal visited the Forum during the summer he joined the Los Angeles Lakers, general manager Jerry West encouraged him to look up at the retired jerseys hanging above the court.

"He said, 'You can be as great as these guys,'" O'Neal recalled.

West's prediction is finally official. Shaq joined Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, George Mikan, West and the rest of the Lakers' greats Tuesday night when the club retired his No. 34 jersey in a halftime ceremony.

"I just wish Dr. Buss was here to see this, to enjoy this joyous occasion," O'Neal said of Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who died in February. "I always hoped and prayed it would come. It was a dream come true."

Although O'Neal rarely finds himself speechless, he's thrilled to receive the honor he first imagined back in 1996 when he chose the Lakers. O'Neal's yellow jersey with white numerals was unveiled to a standing ovation, hanging next to Magic Johnson's No. 32.

"It gets me real emotional," O'Neal said before the game. "Growing up in Newark, New Jersey, and my father teaching me about the game, always mentioning Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and telling me when I was a young medium juvenile delinquent that, 'If you do things right, son, maybe one day you can be as great as those guys.'"

There's no longer any doubt O'Neal ranks among the greatest centers in basketball history. The NBA's sixth-leading career scorer played eight of his 19 seasons with the Lakers, winning three championships and reaching four NBA finals during his basketball prime.

Although O'Neal began his career in Orlando and played for four more teams after leaving Los Angeles, the 15-time All-Star says he considers Los Angeles his NBA home.

"I did most of my damage here, won most of my championships here, had most of my fun here," he said. "Even though I got one in Miami, it was fun, but we had three great ones here, three in a row. If I'm good enough to get into the Hall of Fame, I'll definitely go in as a Laker."

Kobe Bryant was in the locker room during halftime of the Lakers' game against Dallas, but he filmed a video tribute to kick off O'Neal's ceremony, calling him "the most gifted physical specimen I've ever seen play this game.

"What you've meant to the city has been absolutely historical, what we've done together," Bryant added. "I know you've played for other organizations, but you'll always be truly remembered for playing for one."

O'Neal's eight years alongside Bryant are among the most tumultuous and successful times in the team's history. They overcame initial struggles to win three straight titles from 2000-02 with the arrival of coach Phil Jackson, who returned to Staples on Tuesday for O'Neal's ceremony.

O'Neal and Bryant eventually split in 2004 after numerous personal and professional clashes, and their verbal sparring continued through Bryant's fifth championship in 2010. O'Neal insists any feud is long squashed, chalking it all up to posturing and mutual motivation.

"We've talked a lot since our playing days," O'Neal said. "There's two different kinds of dislike. There's an athletic dislike, and there's a real dislike. We never had a real dislike. We had a million good times and a thousand bad times. ... If I had it all over to do again, would I do it different? Probably not."

Jackson got his own attention while attending what was likely his first Lakers game since walking away from the club in 2011 ? and the sellout crowd clearly would rather see him back in the seat currently occupied by Mike D'Antoni. Jackson sat in the second row next to his fiancee, Jeanie Buss, and received several "We Want Phil!" chants of increasing intensity during the ceremony.

"I want to thank you for your dedication and your leadership and the hard work that you put in," Jackson said to O'Neal.

Although he retired in 2011, O'Neal still is making an imprint on the Lakers ? specifically on the psyche of Dwight Howard, their new franchise center.

O'Neal's pointed criticism of Howard in his new job as a television pundit has been an intriguing subplot to the latest Lakers big man's rough debut season. O'Neal didn't back off Howard on his special night, saying Howard should try to average 28 points and 10 rebounds per game if he hopes to be taken seriously as an elite center.

"We don't really have a relationship, but I'm just doing to him what the others did to me," O'Neal said of Howard, recalling Abdul-Jabbar calling him "an OK player" before he had any rings.

"I think it was Kareem's challenge to me to step it up," O'Neal added. "I'm not criticizing (Howard). I'm just issuing a challenge. I think I have the right to say, 'You have to average 28-10 in order to get a championship.' I just see a kid with a lot of talent."

When asked if he empathized with Howard's struggles to get healthy after offseason back surgery, O'Neal said: "My father was a military drill sergeant, and his motto was, 'If you can walk, you can play.' I wish there was a time I was injury-free when I played. I empathize with his pain, but no pain, no gain. He has the potential to be one of the greatest big men ever, but he has to want it."

O'Neal's celebration included profuse thanks to the Buss family, several former coaches and Lakers employees. He name-checked nearly everybody who worked for the Lakers during his eight-year tenure, even extending a detailed thanks to former assistant coach Bill Bertka.

"The only regrets I have are missing 200 games and missing 5,000 free throws," O'Neal said. "Other than that, I had fun, did it my way. Made a lot of friends, made a lot of enemies. It was all fun."

Shift of language function to right hemisphere impedes post-stroke aphasia recovery

Findings published in Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience

Amsterdam, NL, April 4, 2013 In a study designed to differentiate why some stroke patients recover from aphasia and others do not, investigators have found that a compensatory reorganization of language function to right hemispheric brain regions bodes poorly for language recovery. Patients who recovered from aphasia showed a return to normal left-hemispheric language activation patterns. These results, which may open up new rehabilitation strategies, are available in the current issue of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience.

"Overall, approximately 30% of patients with stroke suffer from various types of aphasia, with this deficit most common in stroke with left middle cerebral artery territory damage. Some of the affected patients recover to a certain degree in the months and years following the stroke. The recovery process is modulated by several known factors, but the degree of the contribution of brain areas unaffected by stroke to the recovery process is less clear," says lead investigator Jerzy P. Szaflarski, MD, PhD, of the Departments of Neurology at the University of Alabama and University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center.

For the study, 27 right-handed adults who suffered from a left middle cerebral artery infarction at least one year prior to study enrollment were recruited. After language testing, 9 subjects were considered to have normal language ability while 18 were considered aphasic. Patients underwent a battery of language tests as well as a semantic decision/tone decision cognitive task during functional MRI (fMRI) in order to map language function. MRI scans were used to determine stroke volume.

The authors found that linguistic performance was better in those who had stronger left-hemispheric fMRI signals while performance was worse in those who had stronger signal-shifts to the right hemisphere. As expected, they also found a negative association between the size of the stroke and performance on some linguistic tests. Right cerebellar activation was also linked to better post-stroke language ability.

The authors say that while a shift to the non-dominant right hemisphere can restore language function in children who have experienced left-hemispheric injury or stroke, for adults such a shift may impede recovery. For adults, it is the left hemisphere that is necessary for language function preservation and/or recovery.

Google forks WebKit with Blink, a new web engine for Chromium and Chrome (update)

Google forks WebKit with Blink, a new web engine for Chromium and Chrome (update)

You could call WebKit the glue that binds the modern web: the rendering engine powers Apple's Safari, Google's Chrome, and many mobile browsers past and present. Things are about to unstick a little. Google believes that Chromium's multi-process approach has added too much complexity for both the browser and WebKit itself, so it's creating a separate, simpler fork named Blink. Although the new engine will be much the same as WebKit at the start, it's expected to differ over time as Google strips out unnecessary code and tweaks the underlying platform. We'd also expect it to spread, as the company has confirmed to us that both Chrome and Chrome OS will be using Blink in the future. We're safely distant from the Bad Old Days of wildly incompatible web engines, but the shift may prove a mixed blessing -- it could lead to more advancements on the web, but it also gives developers that much more code to support.

Update: The Next Web has confirmed that Opera, which recently ditched its Presto engine for Webkit, will indeed be using Blink as it's already hitching its proverbial wagon to Chromium.

Alexander Gustafsson posts a picture of his fight-ruining cut (Picture)

Alexander Gustafsson's fight with Gegard Mousasi was called off because of a cut on Gustafsson's face. He posted a picture of that cut on his website.

He sustained the cut during wrestling practice last week. Gustaffson said he lost his balance and hit his eyebrow. The cut received three stitches. He was ready to fight until the doctors told him he couldn't compete.

The problem with the cut is not so much its size or depth, but its location. If it was reopened in a fight, it's unlikely the fight would go on because the blood would impair Gustafsson's vision to a point that it would make the fight unfair. A cut like that would open with ease, too.

So now the UFC turns to Ilir Latifi, Gustafsson's training partner, to fight Gegard Mousasi in a main event.
