HTC Droid DNA retired?

Droid DNA

Has the HTC Droid DNA been given its gold watch and sent packing? Verizon CS says yes, and it's no longer listed for sale

A reader sent in a pretty interesting screenshot, accompanied by some equally interesting information about the HTC Droid DNA. According to Verizon customer service, the DNA is now officially retired. The screenshot of chat with a CS (you can find it after the break) actually uses the word retired, and subsequent inquiries led to a statement from Verizon saying "HTC halted production in efforts to push out an upcoming project on the horizon".

Now normally, we would place little to no faith in the words of an online chat with customer care from any provider. We're not judging, they have a difficult job and get way more harassment than anyone deserves. But after hearing about this, we went looking on Verizon's website, and found that the DNA is nowhere to be seen. You can't buy one from Big Red. Verizon loves to take our money, so there must be a reason they don't want to sell us a Droid DNA.

Now consider the on and off rumors about the HTC One coming to Verizon. We're pretty sure that you'll never be able to buy an "HTC One" for use on Verizon. But ask us if you'll be able to buy a premium HTC device with Sense 5, the new camera, Boomsound, a kick-ass display, and all the other goodies that come with the HTC One and our answer would be different. Don't let semantics like official names fool you. We're pretty confident that something very close to the HTC One is "on the horizon" for Verizon Wireless.

We never pretend that we know what goes on inside the minds of carrier corporate executives. We certainly question many of their decisions, but we're not at the meetings and don't have access to the data they use when they decide things like which phones to sell, and when to stop selling them. And of course, all this could be wrong and the DNA is simply out of stock for a while. We're just going to keep watching this, and when it all works out, we'll let you know.

Thanks, Robert!

DSB2Go

Detect Safe Browsing to Go, known by the less wordy "DSB2Go," is a nifty USB device that offers users a locked-down personal Web browser to protect users' Web activity and accounts from malware designed to intercept login credentials and steal information. With DSB2Go, it doesn't matter if the computer has keyloggers or other types of malware installed, because all user activity and data are encrypted within the device's hardened browser. It is extremely easy to use, as the user just has to plug it in to the computer before logging into the site.

DSB2Go protects users from malware infections, phishing attempts, and pharming attacks. The device also foils man-in-the-middle and man-in-the-browser attacks. There is usually a trade off between security and convenience as the user gives up ease-of use to be secure, or being less secure in order to make it easy to use. DSB2Go balances the two successfully, as the only inconvenience is remembering to carry the USB device.

Many kinds of modern malware burrow deep into the user system in order to avoid being detected by antivirus and other security products. This means users may not even be aware their computers are infected with a banking Trojan or other data-stealing malware. When users access sensitive sites, such as online banking or business applications, from an infected computer, the malware intercepts login credentials and can take over the account. DSB2Go removes the uncertainty, since as long as the users are using the virtualized Web browser, all Web activity and data is encrypted and hidden from the malware. Even if the user is on a Zeus-infected computer, the malware can't penetrate the DSB2Go environment to access the data.

The device doesn't try to protect all Web activity but just those sites administrators identified beforehand in a whitelist on the management portal. Businesses can use DSB2Go as an extra layer of security to protect employees accessing certain business-critical applications, or roll out the service to customers accessing a specific online service. At $37.89 per device for an annual subscription, this can become a fairly expensive solution for large deployments, but Easy Solutions offers volume pricing and discounts.

Before making the plunge, businesses can also sign up for a 15-day free trial, during which they get three DSB2Go USB devices and the ability to whitelist up to three sites on the management portal.

Getting Started
Easy Solutions sent a USB device and created an account on the company's Detect Monitoring Service portal for this review. The company's IT administrator logs into the portal and navigates to the "DSB2Go" tab to activate devices, create groups, define "protected applications," and view usage activity. When I logged in, I saw the USB drive I had was already activated.

If I had additional devices, I could activate it using the serial numbers. I could? set a password for each device and assign a "group." Groups allow administrators to assign basic policies to the device, such as the types of applications the user could access and authentication requirements.

Groups, Devices, Sites
After creating a group, I can set the device's security level?entering the device password or a unique username/password combination before the hardened Web browser launches?or turn it off to use the device without any restrictions. Each device is then assigned to a group.

This way, I could ensure all the devices within a department had the same security level.

The interface was pretty sluggish, which may have been the fault of the test environment I was using. The pages took a while to load when switching tabs, and some windows didn't close right away.

The whitelist lives in the portal's "protected sites" section. I listed all the URLs to sites users are allowed to access using DSB2Go. This part can get tedious quickly for applications which redirects across several subdomains since administrators must specify each address separately. Gmail redirects users to accounts.google.com before displaying the inbox on mail.google.com, for example. For this review, I listed Gmail, Salesforce, TDBank, and Bank of America. I listed both onlinebanking.tdbank.com and www.tdbank.com?for TDBank. If the URL I am adding has SSL (uses HTTPS), then I have to upload the site's certificate.

I can do this manually (downloading the site certificate through the regular browser, or if it is an internal application, using the SSL certificate I have) or use the "scan for certificate" feature. This nifty trick checks the URL and grabs the valid SHA1 fingerprint. Saving the SSL certificate protects users from domain hijacking and other spoofing attacks where users are maliciously redirected to other sites.

I assigned at least one group to each URL. This way, I maintained a single whitelist for the entire organization but could specify a subset for each group. If the site's group didn't match the device's group, the user would not be able to go to that site.

While the list is easy to create, it can get long pretty quickly because of the individual sub-domains that need to be rested. There is no quick way to search or sort the URLs. I was able to filter the view to display URLs assigned to specific groups, but overall, the list is unweildy to work with after a certain length.

The end-user doesn't have any control over what sites the device allows. The entire user experience is managed by the administrator via the portal. This is a great way for adding basic access policies to certain business applications.

Simple for Users
From the user perspective, it's dead simple: plug in the drive into the USB port and open up the special Web browser. The Web browser displays icons for each site the device is authorized to use. After about four or five sites, this screen appears really cluttered and there doesn't seem to be a way to sort the order the icons appear in.

Users click on the icon to go to the permitted site. If there is a problem with the SSL certificate, the user will be blocked.

Other than the fact that the user cannot type in a URL at all in the address bar, this special browser acts just like any other browser. Users can hit the back button to go back in the browsing session and open multiple tabs.

If while browsing through the approved application, an internal link goes to a different subdomain that wasn't already approved (such as customerservice.tdbank.com in the above banking example), the user is? automatically blocked. It would have been nice if the configuration service supported wildcards, so I could just say accept all *.tdbank.com sites without having to list each one individually. On the other hand, this means administrators have granular control, being able to specify which services are allowed: users are allowed to use Gmail and Calendar, but not Groups and Drive, for example.

The fact that the end-user doesn't have to download or install software was a big plus, although I wondered how many people would lose the USB drive or forget to keep it within reach.

I was disappointed the service is currently limited to only Windows users. Mac OS X and Linux users are currently not protected. When I plugged the device in to a Linux laptop, it didn't even detect anything in the USB port.

Secure Browsing?Up To A Point
There are other virtual browser options for businesses, but many of them are out of the SMB's reach. DSB2Go addresses the fact that SMBs need this kind of browser technology, too.

Since all the settings are handled by the cloud service, DSB2Go is perfect for active business travelers who use different devices or access the Internet using open networks, or for customers who need to access a specific service or application. I am concerned about the fact that there is no way for administrator to verify that users are actually using DSB2Go. The user can easily skip the drive altogether and just use the regular Web browser.

Taking advantage of security provided by DSB2Go requires a significant behavior change, as the administrator has to convince the end-user that using this device is worth the extra effort. Other than that, though, DSB2Go is a nifty device that can really help businesses keep their customers and employees while accessing sensitive Web sites.

Look out squirrels: Leopards are new backyard wildlife

Friday, March 29, 2013

A new study led by WCS-India scientist Vidya Athreaya finds that certain landscapes of western India completely devoid of wilderness and with high human populations are crawling with a different kind of backyard wildlife: leopards.

The study found as many as five adult large carnivores, including leopards and striped hyenas, per 100 square kilometers (38 square miles), a density never before reported in a human-dominated landscape.

The study, called "Big Cats in Our Backyards," appeared in the March 6 edition of the journal PLoS One. Authors include: Vidya Athreya and Ullas Karanth of the Wildlife Conservation Society and Centre for Wildlife Studies in Bangalore; Morten Odden of Hedmark University College; John D. C. Linnell of the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research; and Jagdish Krishnaswamy of Asoka Trust for Research of Ecology in the Environment.

Using camera traps, the authors founds that leopards often ranged close to houses at night though remained largely undetected by the public. Despite this close proximity between leopards and people, there are few instances of attacks in this region. The authors also photographed rusty spotted cat, small Indian civet, Indian fox, jungle cat, jackal, mongoose ? and a variety of people from the local communities. The research took place in western Maharashtra, India.

"Human attacks by leopards were rare despite a potentially volatile situation considering that the leopard has been involved in serious conflict, including human deaths in adjoining areas," said big cat expert Ullas Karanth of WCS. "The results of our work push the frontiers of our understanding of the adaptability of both humans and wildlife to each other's presence."

The authors say that the findings show that conservationists must look outside of protected areas for a more holistic approach to safeguarding wildlife in a variety of landscapes.

Meet the XBA: A better, faster, cheaper MBA? - Fortune Management

The Fullbridge Program's Luke Owings

The Fullbridge Program's Luke Owings

FORTUNE -- Students, six to a table, pore over financials and craft investor presentations. The click-clacks of their laptops fill the ornate conference rooms of Boston's mahogany-paneled 19th century Omni Parker House. The space is old, but the class is brand new.

The students are all in the Fullbridge Program, a new kind of business school, akin to an MBA -- a baby brother, perhaps, but with a speed addiction. Fullbridge's founders, husband and wife Peter and Candice Carpenter Olson (he a former CEO at Random House; she a founder at iVillage) have even developed a new certificate for graduates of their program: the XBA.

The XBA mixes drills with a bit of theory. Participants learn to read balance sheets, income, and cash flow statements in small groups for eight hours a day. They evaluate global companies' strategies and performance based on those numbers, and then present their findings in teams at the end of a 20-day, four-week boot camp -- typically over winter or summer break. Fullbridge recruits students and early-career professionals in their late teens to late twenties. Its appeal is that not only will the program help students be more valuable at their jobs, but it will also help them find fulfillment in their careers.

The Olsons founded Fullbridge in 2010 to address a problem they saw their seven children's friends struggle with: Academia gave them critical thinking skills, but left these young people unprepared for real-life work. When Peter, 62, first graduated from college, he recalls that employers either had "extensive training programs or almost unlimited amounts of patience." That's no longer the case and graduates are entering high-expectation jobs with little experience, proving problematic for both parties.

MORE: The problem with Yahoo's Dailymotion deal

The Olsons say they have little desire to replace the traditional undergraduate or MBA experience. They see the XBA as a new category of education -- the finishing touch on the 21st century liberal arts degree. They enlisted their network of successful business friends -- from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner Randy Komisar to Communispace founder and CEO Diane Hessan -- and put together bite-size presentations that address topics like being smart versus being effective at work and how to make good use of Excel. The lessons also dive into companies like Apple (AAPL) and Starbucks (SBUX), talking about how these brands have thrived in competitive environments. And Peter gives an abbreviated step-by-step of how he examined cash flow statements and the like while he was CEO of Random House. After running a successful pilot with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom first-year associates, the duo fine-tuned Fullbridge's curriculum for undergraduates.

Though Peter still teaches business?administration?at Harvard Business School, the pair say that the new program has forced them to reevaluate traditional teaching methods. Candice, 60, has focused on how Fullbridge's learning materials are designed. To create a visually appealing environment for Fullbridge participants, she hired firms like Tank Design and Mechanica to create eye-catching content for the students. "We could be called an education-slash-tech company, but the two biggest checks we've written have been to design firms," she laughs. Short video lessons and team activities serve as the program's foundation.

Students pay between $5,000-6,000 to attend Fullbridge, depending on date and location. Students can also access housing at an additional cost of $1250-$1450. Since the program's 2010 launch, 584 students have participated.

The power of a good coach

At the Omni Parker House, Luke Owings' 6'6" frame towers over five Fullbridge coaches. Owings, 28, played basketball at Princeton. It's a day after the program's most intense lesson, "Cintas y Lazos," where students review the financials of a new company (it makes ribbons, of all things), and are then tasked with presenting investors with a plan to reach profitability, taking into account brand, salaries, manufacturing costs, and other factors. There's one message in the coaches' room: "Whatever you do for this opener, bring the energy." Owings bounces as he advises the coaches: "We're really trying to get them into that culture of feedback, feedback, feedback."

In the same way that a terrible boss can create a hellish workplace, an ineffective Fullbridge coach can ruin the XBA program. Fullbridge assigns one coach to every 16 students. Owings plays coach to the coaches.

Peter recruited the former McKinsey analyst in 2011, just after he graduated from Harvard Business School. Owings looks for approachable professionals with credibility when he searches for coaches. Many Fullbridge coaches are current MBA students with several years of work experience. He argues that coaches get just as much out of the program as the students: they gain leadership skills and awaken otherwise latent teaching talent.

MORE: This incredible face is the future of tech

Coaches complete 50-60 hours of training before meeting students, provide each student with around 100 performance reviews over the course of 20 days, and spend two days with each student to brainstorm about their dream careers and offer a path to achieve those goals.

Ben Monnin, a 2010 Columbia graduate, participated in the Fullbridge program last winter while working at startup DormAid. Owings, who was his coach, often spoke to him about the Minto Pyramid Principle (situation, complication, question, and answer), which he picked up at McKinsey. Monin says that kind of thinking taught him how to simplify arguments and use tools like PowerPoint and Excel for effect, rather than show. He now works in the U.S. and overseas as a portfolio manager at Saudi Arabia-based Makshaff Services.

Moving into new territory

Fullbridge has wasted no time waiting to expand. The company hosts programs in various cities, and it launched its veteran program in partnership with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America this January. James Wang, who works in the military's IT department, says there's little innovation in his department at the Pentagon; he credits the program with sparking his interest in entrepreneurship.

Fullbridge also works with universities like Bowdoin and Washington University in St. Louis to offer complementary courses for students. (Some offer it free to scholarship students, others send students to the open enrollment programs.) "Universities move slowly; they're a conservator of values," Candice explains. Working with a program like Fullbridge helps these schools fill this knowledge gap faster, Candace argues. "There isn't much overlap between what we do and what they do."

Fullbridge is also going global: In 2011, it launched a program in South Korea and last month, it ended its Phase 1 program in partnership with Prince Sultan University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Fourteen men and 22 women enrolled, and were separated by gender. Since the coaches weren't sure what to expect, they overcompensated by assign one coach for every six students. "For many participants, it was their first experience in a professional setting," says Owings. "There was a sense of urgency among the women, whereas the men knew there would be jobs waiting for them upon graduation."?Just after the Fullbridge program ended, the students began 7-month co-op assignments at PriceWaterhouseCooper, Microsoft (MSFT), the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce, and at area preschools. This summer, Fullbridge will run a program in Shanghai.

The company's obsession with feedback doesn't end with the students; on-the-ground successes and failures are reported to Owings, who helps program manager Matt Rubins mold the different course tracks -- business immersion, entrepreneurship, and legal -- to cater to Fullbridge's professionally and geographically diverse audiences.

MORE: China and Russia: Best frenemies forever?

Over the next two years, Fullbridge plans to launch JobX, a database of 1,000 interviews with employees from varying industries, asking what they love and what they hate about their jobs and coded based on students' career assessment indexes. (Fullbridge uses HBS senior fellow Tim Butler's CareerLeader program.) It also acquired CollegePortfolio.com, hoping to use its platform to create peer-mentoring groups over the next year, and will be rolling out follow up 5-10 day programs that dive deeper into subjects like marketing, technology, design, and finance for Fullbridge graduates.

In 2014, Fullbridge is launching a World Tour: for American students, it's a seven-week program with stops in cities like Mumbai, Prague, and Shanghai; international students will visit London, New York City, and Silicon Valley. ?These new initiatives focus on opening students' eyes to all career possibilities.

As Fullbridge grows, it faces the challenge of hiring more coaches without sacrificing talent quality. The coaches make the program worthwhile, giving participants a taste of what professional relationships are like, while instilling confidence in the dough-eyed?twenty-somethings? Its unlikely Fullbridge graduates needed the program to find success, but it does give students a chance to find careers that match their personalities -- and avoid the astronomical cost of business school.

Could Ireland's press regulation system work in Britain?

Ireland's press regulations, which include an ombudsman and a council of publishers, public citizens, and journalists, are less restrictive than the proposed British version.

With the British government moving ahead on a new media regulator and the UK press in revolt against, some in the country wonder if their neighbors to the west could offer a solution. Could Ireland's model of an official Press Council and ombudsman work in Britain?

Set up by the newspaper industry in response to a government threat to introduce privacy legislation, the 13-member Press Council includes representatives of publishers, members of the public (the appointments are publicly advertised), and one from the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), the leading journalists' union in Britain and Ireland.

Publications that are members, including all of the national newspapers, agree to be bound by its code of conduct, and to recognize the decisions of the council and ombudsman. Membership in the council is not mandatory, but publications that are members are generally subject to lesser damages in the event of successful court actions against them, as a result of the council and ombudsman being "recognized in statute."

The ombudsman, currently?John Horgan, a former Labor party politician and journalism professor, adjudicates on complaints from subjects of newspaper stories, and if agreement cannot be found between all parties involved, he can make a ruling or refer the complaint to the Press Council for a final decision.

Seamus Dooley, the Irish secretary of the NUJ, says regulation has not been proscriptive.

The Press Council's code of conduct is more carrot than stick, and starts with a full-throated defense of a free press, saying: "The freedom to publish is vital to the right of the people to be informed. This freedom includes the right of a newspaper to publish what it?considers to be news, without fear or favour, and the right to comment upon it."

It goes on, however, to detail what the Press Council sees as the correct way for publications to operate, although the tone is more aspirational than condemnatory. For example, retractions must be printed in a prominent place and ordinary members of the public are entitled to privacy.

"We're quite happy with the way it's going," says retired business journalist Martin Fitzpatrick, NUJ's appointee to the Irish Press Council. "We've never had a hugely contentious press. There is a degree of timidity, and you could fault them for not foreseeing the onset of the financial crisis, but that's not down to regulation."

The high opinion of press regulation is not universally held, however, even in the NUJ's Irish ranks.

"[British] newspapers did horrible things, but they also uncovered horrible things that were done. The effect of regulation will not be the protection of people who, through no fault of their own, find themselves at the center of press attention, it will be the protection of the rich and powerful," says Gerard Cunningham, chairman of the NUJ's freelance branch in Ireland.

(Could Ireland's regulation work in Britain? British papers rebel as UK press regulation moves closer to reality)

Mr. Cunningham, who formerly worked in the US, says the culture of the British press is, for demonstrable reasons, comparable to other countries only in very general terms.

"This is about all about competition," he says. "Maybe The New York Times and, to a lesser extent, The Christian Science Monitor have a national reach, but they're not really competing against a regional metro daily," he says.

This situation with each US metro market having a dominant player is in stark contrast with Britain, where 11 national dailies, a clutch of regional newspapers, a few specialist titles, and an independent national Scottish press all slug it out for the same pound.

"The British market is intensely competitive and they try to break every story. They really do publish and be damned," says Cunningham.

In contrast, a staggering 19 daily papers are available on the newsstands nationwide in Ireland, though nine of these are rarely read imports from the US and UK and three more are regional titles from Northern Ireland. Of the seven popular national newspapers in Ireland, two tabloids are "Celtified" editions of British newspapers and two more are hybrids of British and Irish material. All four are members of the Press Council, though their British equivalents object to press regulation.

Having a regulated press hasn't stopped the Irish government from indicating it may seek further powers, though. In February 2012, the publication by the Irish Daily Star of candid photographs of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, prompted Irish Justice Minister Alan Shatter to consider enacting new, stricter privacy legislation. The government has yet to do so, however.

Cheesecake-swirled carrot cake

A cheesecake swirl takes this classic carrot cake to the next level. Make this cake to serve after Easter dinner, and forget about those baskets full of candy.

Such is the case with this cheesecake-swirled carrot cake. The idea came to me as I was brainstorming for some interesting twist on carrot cake to share as Easter approaches. The way I figured it, if carrot cake and sweet vanilla cream cheese frosting are delicious together (and they are), and cheesecake is also made with cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla (which it is), then carrot cake and cheesecake would be delicious together. If A and B, then C sort of logic? or something like that anyway.

I initially contemplated stacking layers of carrot cake with cheesecake, but the idea seemed too similar to a basic carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. That was the point where I decided I?d bake the two cakes together in one pan, intermingled to create one grand cheesecake-swirled carrot cake. It was in my research phase of concocting this delicious confection that I discovered The Cheesecake Factory already beat me to the punch. Having been to The Cheesecake Factory a grand total of one, maybe two times in my life, probably about 10 years ago, this was news to me.

So, turns out my grand idea isn?t nearly as revolutionary as I?d initially thought, but it?is?spectacularly delicious, nonetheless. Rich, moist carrot cake gets twisted with a creamy classic cheesecake to create a treat which is sure to be the hit of the Easter dessert buffet. Ol? Peter Rabbit might even forego his basket of candy in favor of a slice of this carroty beauty.

Cheesecake-swirled carrot cake

For the carrot cake

?1 3/4 cups flour

3/4 teaspoon baking powder

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ginger

pinch of nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 sticks unsalted butter, softened to room temperature (plus more for greasing pan)

2/3 cup dark brown sugar

1/3 cup white sugar

1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

2 eggs

1/3 cup water

2 cups finely grated carrots (approximately 4 medium-sized carrots)

3/4 cup golden raisins (optional, but recommended)

For the cheesecake

3 8-ounce bars of cream cheese, softened to room temperature

1 cup sugar

3 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 10-inch springform pan with butter.

For the carrot cake:?In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and the eggs, one at a time, beating between each addition. Add the water, then beat for another minute. Add the carrots, then beat for another minute. On low speed, gradually beat in the dry mixture until well blended. Stir in the raisins.

For the cheesecake:?Using an electric mixer, beat together the cream cheese and sugar until well blended. Add the vanilla and the eggs one at a time, beating until well blended.

To assemble the cake:?Spread about 1/2 of the carrot cake batter over the bottom of the prepared springform pan. Drop large spoonfuls of about 1/2 of the cheesecake mixture on top of the carrot cake. Drop large spoonfuls of the remaining carrot cake mixture on top of and around the cheesecake. Pour the remaining cheesecake mixture over the top. Use a spatula to smooth the cheesecake on the top. Bake for about 55-65 minutes, until set.

Cool at room temperature for about an hour, then refrigerate for a few hours until completely chilled.

It?s cheap and easy to get, but few Canadian renters bother signing up for tenants? insurance.

According to Statistics Canada, more than half of renters in the country don?t have the protection to help them replace their belongings in the event of a fire, flood or other disaster.

It?s hard to pin down exactly why those with renters? insurance are in the minority, but it can likely be chalked up to confusion about what is covered by the building?s owner.

Water damage and fire are behind the loss of property for people like Nicholas Adams, who stood helpless outside his Vanier apartment Saturday as firefighters doused remaining hotspots in the burned out three-storey building.

?It?s all (gone) I think,? he said, surveying the partially collapsed roof of the building.

Damage to the building has been pegged at $1 million.

The owner of Adams? building almost certainly has insurance, but that won?t do the tenants much good, according to insurance company Rhodes & Williams Ltd.

?(Owners may) have insurance coverage for certain items inside your rental unit, such as the carpets, light fittings and appliances,? the company states on its website. ?Your landlord?s insurance will not cover your personal belongings. Your furniture, jewelry, artwork, entertainment equipment and other valuable belongings will not be protected.?

Adams? didn?t have insurance and doubted anyone else in the building did either.

Others agree the idea of buying insurance for a place you don?t own is often not thought about until after a tragedy.

?I think it?s an afterthought for most renters, it was for me, anyway,? said Devon Babin, who rents an apartment in Centretown. ?It?s sad that it takes such a tragic reminder for me to get insurance on my valuables.?

Getting insured as a renter is a cost effective way of getting some peace of mind. A few minutes spent on various insurance companies? quote generator, and the Sun found tenant insurance went for between $13 and $25 per month, which comes out to $150 to $296 a year, depending on the area and the type of property you rent.

To help victims of Saturday?s fire, Montreal Rd. diner Bobby?s Table is collecting gift cards to help the displaced get back on their feet. They restaurant is also accepting empty bottle donations and will use the refund money for additional gift cards.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Karzai: Explosions show Taliban 'at the service' of America

Afghan President Hamid Karzai accused the Taliban and US forces of working together on Sunday. He said Saturday's suicide bombings, which coincided with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel's visit, were meant to show violence will worsen if foreign troops leave.

Karzai said two suicide bombings that killed 19 people on Saturday ? one outside the Afghan Defense Ministry and the other near a police checkpoint in eastern Khost province ? show the insurgent group is conducting attacks to help show that international forces will still be needed to keep the peace after their current combat mission ends in 2014.

"The explosions in Kabul and Khost yesterday showed that they are at the service of America and at the service of this phrase: 2014. They are trying to frighten us into thinking that if the foreigners are not in Afghanistan, we would be facing these sorts of incidents," he said during a nationally televised speech about the state of Afghan women.

US and NATO forces commander Gen. Joseph Dunford said Karzai had never expressed such views to him, but said it was understandable that tensions would arise as the coalition balances the need to complete its mission and the Afghans' move to exercise more sovereignty.

"We have fought too hard over the past 12 years, we have shed too much blood over the last 12 years, to ever think that violence or instability would be to our advantage," Dunford said.

Karzai is known for making incendiary comments in his public speeches, a move that is often attributed to him trying to appeal to those who sympathize with the Taliban or as a way to gain leverage when he feels his international allies are ignoring his country's sovereignty. In previous speeches, he has threatened to join the Taliban and called his NATO allies occupiers who want to plunder Afghanistan's resources.

Karzai also denounced the arrest of a university student Saturday by Afghan forces his aide said were working for the CIA. It was unclear why the student was detained.

Presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi said the CIA freed the student after Karzai's staff intervened, but that Karzai wants the Afghan raiders arrested. The president issued a decree on Sunday banning all foreign forces from universities and schools unless they obtain prior permission from the Afghan government.

Ask Engadget: how long should I first-charge a battery?

Ask Engadget how long should I firstcharge a battery

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Bernard, who wants an answer to the age-old question of ensuring you get the most out of your batteries. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"It's said that you should always leave brand-new electronics plugged in for 'a few hours' after being fully charged, but how do you decide that period of time? Is there a calculation depending on the capacity of the battery, or what? Help me, please!"

Nowadays, do you even need to? While memory effect was an issue on NiCad batteries, Lithium Ion units don't suffer from the same issue. It could also be tied to the belief that most chargers only re-juice batteries up to 95 percent, but we can't find any authoritative proof on the matter. Let's turn it over to the electrical engineers and battery experts who read Engadget on a regular basis so we can sort this out, once and for all!

(AP) ? Before the Dominican Republic played its first game in the World Baseball Classic, Jose Reyes warned that the team's only goal was to win the championship.

Opponents take note: The Dominicans are serious about it.

Reyes had four hits, Robinson Cano drove in three runs and the Dominican Republic beat Venezuela 9-3 on Thursday night in their WBC opener.

"I think these men are on a mission," Dominican Republic manager Tony Pena said, acknowledging even he was surprised by all the offense. "They're on a mission, and they don't want to waste a moment."

In the first game of Group C play, Hanley Ramirez hit a long home run and Cano went 3 for 5 with two doubles to help the Dominicans get off to a strong start in a first-round pool that also includes Puerto Rico and Spain.

Nelson Cruz and Alejandro De Aza each drove in two runs. Venezuela starter Anibal Sanchez faced seven batters and got only one out.

Venezuela slugger Miguel Cabrera went 0 for 4 with a walk and stranded three runners in a game that took 3 hours, 55 minutes ? not including a 50-minute rain delay.

"He's human," Venezuela manager Luis Sojo said. "Baseball is an unpredictable game. Hitting is the hardest part. Maybe it's been easier for Miguel than others. They did a good job."

Part of Pena's strategy was to keep Cabrera contained. The Detroit Tigers star won the AL MVP and Triple Crown last season.

"Miguel Cabrera is baseball's best hitter. He's not going to win any games from me. Simple," Pena said.

The Dominican Republic scored five runs in the first two innings and sealed it with three in the seventh. It was the latest display of offensive firepower from a star-studded team that totaled 23 runs and 41 hits in a pair of tuneup games against the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees.

The rain delay led to early exits for Sanchez and Dominican Republic starter Edinson Volquez.

The Dominicans improved to 3-0 against Venezuela in the WBC, including a pair of wins in 2006.

Venezuela's players wore black armbands to honor President Hugo Chavez, who died Tuesday, and observed a moment of silence before taking the field.

The Red Cross Has Updated its First Aid Guidelines for Choking Victims

The Red Cross Has Updated its First Aid Guidelines for Choking VictimsThe Red Cross has updated its first aid guidelines for conscious choking victims. They now recommend that you give five back blows before performing the heimlich maneuver.

Reproduced below are the updated guidelines:

If you encounter a conscious, choking individual that is coughing, encourage continued coughing. If the victim is unable to cough, speak, or breathe, complete the following:

  • Send someone to call 9-1-1
  • Lean person forward and give 5 back blows with heel of your hand.
  • Give 5 quick abdominal thrusts by placing the thumbside of your fist against the middle of the victim's abdomen, just above the navel. Grab your fist with the other hand.
  • Repeat until the object the person is choking on is forced out and person breathes or coughs on his or her own.

And now, all of those choking victim posters in NYC are pretty much out of date.

It Happened To Me Contest Entry: I Called Off My Wedding

xoJane:

I met him when I was 17. He was a state-champion-level athlete, shy, thoughtful, and awkward. I was an outspoken, lost girl with an eating disorder. As we began dating, I opened up to him easily, spilling out my pain and strength and confusion, letting my constricted heart dissolve and absorb into his warm boy-hands. He was my first and my last love.

We dated through my going to treatment and fighting to recover. We dated through him leaving for college and me staying in my hometown, detailing our lives through childish letters and long phone calls. We were growing together, developing on our own academically and socially, but safely within the commitment of each other.

FINRA: Broker Lured NFL Players into Casino Deal

FINRA, Wall Street?s self-regulator, barred a Florida broker on Thursday for allegedly steering 31 NFL players into a shady casino investment that lost his clients about $40 million.

According to FINRA, Jeffrey Rubin, who operated Florida-based Pro Sports Financial, made ?unsuitable recommendations? to an NFL player to invest in ?illiquid, high-risk securities? tied to a now-bankrupt casino in Alabama. That NFL player, who wasn?t named by FINRA, lost about $3 million on the deal.

FINRA said 30 other NFL players also invested in the casino project, based on Rubin?s referrals, and lost about $40 million.

One player, according to FINRA, invested a total of $3.5 million, which represented ?a majority of his liquid net worth,? in ?four high-risk securities.??

Rubin cashed in on the casino transactions, receiving a 4% ownership stake and $500,000 from the project promoter for the referrals, FINRA said.

?This case demonstrates how broker misconduct can target high-income, inexperienced, and vulnerable investors,? Brad Bennett, FINRA?s executive vice president and chief of enforcement, said in a statement. ?Jeffrey Rubin took advantage of professional athletes who placed their trust in him."

FINRA said Rubin neither admitted nor denied the charges but did consent to the entry of the regulator?s findings.

Rubin gained attention in the sports world for his role in helping to expose a $15 million Ponzi scheme involving former NFL agent Tank Black.

According to a September report by Yahoo Sports, the former and current players who lost money in the casino include Fred Taylor, Jevon Kearse, Terrell Owens, Plaxico Burress, Clinton Portis, Roscoe Parrish, Gerard Warren, Kyle Orton, Greg Olsen, Santonio Holmes and Santana Moss.

When reached by phone, Taylor, who retired in 2011, said: ?I know Jeff but I won?t comment about my relationship with him.?

The NFL declined to comment specifically on the news, but a spokesman said active players are not allowed to invest in casinos. It's unclear if the NFL is investigating the matter.

It's also not clear if Rubin was part of a financial advisor registration program administered by the league's player association, the NFLPA. The program, which requires applicants to pay a $2,500 fee to register, aims to protect players from receiving "poor financial advice," according to the NFLPA website.

Representatives from the NFLPA didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Rubin, who at the time was working at Alterna Capital Corporation and International Assets Advisory, failed to obtain required approval from his employers to participate in the securities transactions involving the casino, FINRA said.

This is not the first run-in with FINRA for Rubin, who was fined $40,000 in 2004 to settle a complaint by former NFL linebacker Johnny Rutledge, Yahoo Sports reported.

The NFL has worked with FINRA since January 2011, last year unveiling a new program with FINRA's Investor Education Foundation to assist incoming players "spot and avoid investment fraud" and begin their career by making "informed financial decisions."

Thermodo brings a mercury-free way to measure air temperature on your smartphone

DNP Thermodo brings a mercuryfree way to measure air temperature on your smartphone

If you're the type to eschew the weather report on your smartphone and just, you know, open the window instead, the Thermodo sensor and app that just launched on Kickstarter may be for you. The petite device inserts into (and draws power from) the audio jack of your iOS or Android handset / tab, measures the exterior or interior air temperature, then sends a corresponding audio signal to the mic input on your device. The companion app, along with developer Robocat's Haze and Thermo apps, interprets that signal and displays the temperature on your device -- or you can develop your own with the outfit's open source SDK. The project is now live on Kickstarter where a minimum $19 bid will get you one in black, with the company looking for $35k total for the tooling and materials needed to build them. You can scoot over to the video after the break for more, or check the source to grab one.

Syrian rebels seize U.N. peacekeepers

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels have seized a convoy of U.N. peacekeepers near the Golan Heights and say they will hold them captive until President Bashar al-Assad's forces pull back from a rebel-held village which has seen heavy recent fighting.

The capture was announced in rebel videos posted on the Internet and confirmed on Wednesday by the United Nations in New York, which said about 20 peacekeepers had been detained.

The seizure is the most direct threat to U.N. personnel in the nearly two-year-old uprising against Assad and Human Rights Watch said it was investigating the same brigade for past executions.

It came on the day that Britain said it would increase aid to the opposition forces and the Arab League gave a green light to member states to arm the rebels.

The regional Arab body also invited the opposition Syrian coalition to take Syria's seat at a League meeting in Doha later this month. Syria was suspended in November 2011 in response to its crackdown on protests which since spiralled into civil war.

The peacekeepers of the UNDOF mission have been monitoring a ceasefire line between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, captured by the Jewish state in a 1967 war, for nearly four decades.

Israel has warned that it will not "stand idle" as Syria's civil war spills over into the Golan region.

The United Nations in New York said its peacekeepers had been detained by around 30 fighters in the Golan Heights.

"The U.N. observers were on a regular supply mission and were stopped near Observation Post 58, which had sustained damage and was evacuated this past weekend following heavy combat in close proximity at Al Jamla," it said, referring to a village which saw fierce confrontations on Sunday.

It did not say the nationality of the observers but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group which is in contact with the rebel brigade said they were Filipino.

In one rebel video, a young man saying he was from the "Martyrs of Yarmouk" brigade stood surrounded by several rebel fighters with assault rifles in front of a two white armoured vehicles and a truck with "UN" markings.

"The command of the Martyrs of Yarmouk...is holding forces of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force until the withdrawal of forces of the regime of Bashar al-Assad from the outskirts of the village of Jamla," the man, who was wearing civilian clothes, said.

At least five people could be seen sitting in the vehicles wearing U.N. light blue helmets and bulletproof vests.

"If no withdrawal is made within 24 hours we will treat them as prisoners," he said, accusing them of collaborating with Assad's forces to push the rebels out of Jamla.

Nearly two years since the uprising started, rebels are distrustful of a United Nations that they say has failed to support their cause.

MILITARY AID

Earlier on Wednesday the United Nations said the number of refugees who have fled Syria had reached 1 million, part of an accelerating exodus from a conflict which is approaching its second anniversary with no prospect of an end to the bloodshed.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague, pledging support for Assad's opponents, said the civil war had reached catastrophic proportions and that international efforts to stem the violence had been an abject failure.

Senior U.S. and Russian diplomats will discuss the conflict at a meeting in London on Thursday, Russia said, the latest in a series of meetings aimed at seeking an end to the bloodshed.

But Hague said the chances of getting an immediate political solution to the crisis were slim and that diplomacy was taking too long. However, he played down the prospect of direct Western military intervention.

"If a political solution to the crisis in Syria is not found and the conflict continues, we and the rest of the European Union will have to be ready to move further, and we should not rule out any option for saving lives," he said.

A Syrian rebel leader sought to persuade European governments to lift an arms embargo for the rebels, saying any weapons provided would be accounted for and possibly returned.

Brigadier Selim Idris said in Brussels that Syrian rebels recorded the arms they received.

"The weapons are registered on lists with numbers on each weapon. We distribute those weapons. And we know precisely who has received them," he told a news conference.

ONE MILLION REFUGEES

At a registration centre for Syrians in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, a 19-year-old mother of two registered on Wednesday as the millionth refugee to flee her country.

"The situation is very bad for us. We can't find work," said the teenage mother, wearing a green headscarf and holding her daughter as she spoke to reporters.

"I live with 20 people in one room. We can't find any other house as it is too expensive. We want to return to Syria. We wish for the crisis to be resolved."

Syrians started trickling out of the country 23 months ago when Assad's forces shot at pro-democracy protests inspired by Arab revolts elsewhere.

The uprising has since turned into an increasingly sectarian struggle between armed rebels and government soldiers and militias. An estimated 70,000 people have been killed.

Around half the refugees are children, most of them aged under 11, and the numbers leaving are mounting every week, the United Nations refugee agency said in statement.

"With a million people in flight, millions more displaced internally, and thousands of people continuing to cross the border every day, Syria is spiralling towards full-scale disaster," U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Ant?nio Guterres said in a statement.
